Getting There:

Map of Astoria downtown

There are at least three ways to get from Portland to Astoria, and each is about 96 miles, give or take (from downtown to downtown). One route may be better or worse for you, depending on your starting point (i.e. are you closer to one highway than another), and while they all offer great views along the way, plan on a 2-hour drive -- on a good day with no traffic, you can make it in 100 minutes, but those 20 minutes can easily disappear behind a slow truck or a patch of rain or fog or wandering deer in the road. Drive safe!

From Portland, I-5 to Hwy. 30 (about 97 miles, fastest route):

  • Get on I-5 North (or take I-205 north to I-5, if that's closer to you), all the way out of town.
  • Continue north on I-5 to Longview, Washington. Turn off at Exit #36 and follow signs to Highway 30 on the Oregon side of the Columbia River.
  • Go west on Highway 30 to Astoria.
  • Highway 30 becomes Marine Drive (and one-way, heading South) when it goes through Astoria.
  • Turn left at 12th and Marine Drive; Andrew and Steve's Restaurant will be on your right corner, on 12th and Marine Drive.
  • The Liberty Theater is on Commercial, which runs parallel (and one-way the other way) to Marine Drive.
  • So if you miss the turn onto 12th, just continue on down Marine Drive and turn left further down but be careful, they're alternating one-way streets.
  • Then just drive back down Commercial until you see the Liberty.
  • There should be plenty of parking within a few blocks of the theater in every direction.

From Portland, Hwy. 30 (about 95 miles, most scenic route):

From I-5 south of Portland: Go north on I-5, follow the signs to I-405. Once on I-405, take the St. Helens/Hwy. 30 exit, follow the signs to Hwy. 30.

From I-5 north of Portland: Go south on I-5, follow the signs to I-405. Once on I-405, take the St. Helens/Hwy. 30 exit, follow the signs to Hwy. 30.

From I-84: Get on I-84, headed west. Exit onto I-5 north, follow the signs to I-405. Once on I-405, take the St. Helens/Hwy. 30 exit, follow the signs to Hwy. 30.

Or from downtown Portland: Take Naito Parkway ("Front Street") towards St. John's, follow the signs to Hwy. 30.

Once you're on Hwy. 30 --

  • Continue west on Highway 30 to Astoria.
  • Watch your speed as you enter and exit Scappoose, Rainier, and Clatskanie, as well as other small towns, the police will give you a ticket and a big fat fine if you don't obey all posted speed limits.
  • Highway 30 becomes Marine Drive (and one-way through downtown) when it goes through Astoria.

26 (for you Beaverton and beyond people):

  • Get on Hwy. 26 headed west.
  • Follow signs to Oregon coast, Hwy. 101.
  • Take Hwy. 101 exit north, to Seaside/Astoria.
  • Follow signs on 101 to Astoria; once you cross the Young's Bay Bridge into Astoria, Hwy. 101 becomes Hwy. 30/Marine Drive.
  • Stay on Marine Drive, you'll have to bear right onto 8th street once you enter downtown Astoria.
  • The first left after you get onto 8th street is Commercial (there's a flashing traffic signal there). Turn left onto Commericial, and the Liberty Theater will be ahead four blocks on your right.
